Marie Ringwald

Since childhood the activity of constructing has been my modus operandi. What I love to look at informs my art. The work is inspired by everyday, simply made buildings that are designed for working in, or holding things - such as warehouses, farm builldings, sheds, Quonset Huts and storefronts. I use paints, found + new wood, sheet metal, roofing supplies + other construction materials. These carefully chosen and fabricated materials become part of the subject.

The irregular geometry of vernacular of architecture has inspired my work for decades.  Lately on my travels to London and up and down the USA east coast, I’ve been looking at modern buildings with curvaceous forms with the intent to throw some curves into the work.  In addition to images seen in my travels I’ve relied on photos, pictures from newspapers, magazines and images on the screen.

Some of the work references actual buildings, other works are variations. I separately think of the materials of building – especially sheet metal and wood as the skin while I construct my forms.

i’ve exhibited throughout the US. My work is in private collections in the US as well as in South America + Europe.

I was Professor at the Corcoran College of Art + Design in DC, where I taught from 1976 – 2004.

Born raised and educated in the Bronx, NY, I came to DC in 1971. My studio is in Shaw.
